James “Smitty” Harold Smith, Sr.

With profound sadness we announce the passing of James “Smitty” Harold Smith, Sr., whose kind and generous spirit touched countless lives. He closed his eyes for the final time at home surrounded by loved ones April 19, 2026, at the age of 88.

James was born Aug. 21, 1937, in Deport, TX, to Troy and Minnie (Bailey) Smith.

He was united in marriage to Carol McLamarrah July 24, 1957, in Clinton, IA. Their love was truly a beautiful once-in-a-lifetime love. Together they had four children: James, Jr., Michael, Julie and Vicki.

His first job was picking cotton at the age of six. He started working as a drywaller at the age of 15 and continued that profession for many years. He was well known for his excellent skills in hanging drywall with speed and accuracy. He owned and operated Smitty’s Overtime Inn in Valley Junction, WI, with his wife, Carol, from 1986 until 2000 when they retired. They made many friends through those years.

One of James’ greatest joys was camping and fishing on the Mississippi River. Reeling in a big catfish brought a huge smile to his face. He loved to read western novels and watch western movies, and enjoyed reading books to his grandchildren. He had a passion for the Dallas Cowboys and loved to show his support of the team. He loved supporting and watching the Milwaukee Brewers. Above all, he loved his family and supported them through all ups and downs.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Minnie; brothers Malcolm Smith, Ralph Smith, Billy Smith and Wayne Smith; and sisters Marie Stewart and Doris Wood.

James’ memory lives on in the hearts of his wife, Carol of Black River Falls; sons James (Sue) Smith, Jr. of Necedah, WI, and Michael (Cheri) Smith of Lake City, FL; daughters Julie (Arnie) Iverson of Black River Falls, WI, and Vicki (Matt) Wildes of Camp Douglas, WI; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Julie Smith of Cataract, WI, Grace Coman of Tomah, WI, and Dorothy Jones of Winthrop Harbor, IL. He is further survived by his nieces, nephews, other family members and close friends.

We’ll see you in a few days, Dad.
