Jack Phillip Titter, 82, of Melrose, WI, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, at Emplify Health by Gundersen in La Crosse, WI, with his family by his side.
Jack was born in Sparta, WI, Oct. 5, 1943, to Jack and Helen E. (Thayer) Titter, Sr. Jack’s father moved them to Chicago where he was serving in the military. At some point, Jack Sr. just seemed to disappear and Jr. and his brother were raised by a single mother for several years until she met Palmer C. “Pete” Johnson, who was thereafter considered to be the father of Jack and his brothers, Virgil “Bill” and Michael.
The Titter boys attended school in a one-room block building in Upper Burns through the eighth grade and then went on to attend high school in Bangor, WI. Jack attended Bangor High School through his junior year when he joined the U.S. Army, completing high school at the Presidio of San Francisco. Jack remained in the army for eight years from November of 1960 to November of 1968, achieving the rank of sergeant. In November of 1968, Jack took his discharge from the army and almost immediately went to work with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections at the prison in Waupun, WI, where he attained the rank of lieutenant and functioned for six years as the criminal investigation lieutenant. After that, Jack transferred to the Division of Probation and Parole in the Black River Falls office from which he retired after 33 years of correctional experience. Jack loved reading and messing on his computer.
Survivors are his wife, Judy Schultz of Melrose; a son, Phillip J. Titter of Marshfield, WI; a grandson, Seth (Christina) Titter; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Michael (Susan); and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Palmer Johnson; his first wife, Elizabeth Titter, nee. Ayton; two sons, Richard and Frederic; his older brother, Virgil “Bill” and a sister, Susan Martuzie.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, 2 p.m., at Zwickey Funeral Homes, Melrose chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday one hour prior to services.
Jack always said that he had the high honor of being married to two of the most wonderful women in the world, Elizabeth and his current wife, Judy Schultz.
